Fusion Haven Cafe & Restaurant

Last Saturday night, I had a date.

Aloha Cocktail Chicken- RM11.90

This date of mine is currently doing her internship in KL and is staying put at Sri Petaling. To make things easier for everyone and to pretend to be a gracious host slash old friend slash food blogger that I am, I suggested having our dinner at Fusion Haven which is kinda like a hidden gem in this Commonwealth town. Besides my date has always been bugging me to take her out to try new food.

It was raining very heavily that night but people still came in scores to the cafe for dinner. The cafe champions on its 'fusion' concept so it is not surprising to find the furnitures and decos fitting the concept, though in my honest opinion, contemporary colourful Ikea tables and chairs would make the cafe nicer rather than Chinese inspired marbled tabletops and chairs. The English themed wallpaper is a nice touch though ;)

Unagi Rice Noodle- RM9.90

For appetizers, we had the Aloha Chicken Cocktail (RM11.90) and Unagi Rice Noodle (RM9.90) as recommended by Ho Jiak! and a few other blog reviews. The dishes arrived not too long after, great because it was pouring out there and our stomachs were growling. I quite like the Unagi Rice Noodle, there are shredded carrots and rice noodles wrapped with seaweed, deep fried and topped with a dollop of mayo and some ikura. Nice! There's no real unagi though, I suppose it's just a name to depict the dish as it looks like unagi.

I did not enjoy the Aloha Chicken Cocktail much as it was a little bit spicy for me. Later I found out the spicyness came from the use of tobasco sauce as an ingredient. However, you gotta give credits for the presentation! Very nice!

English Herbs Butter Baked Lamb Chop- RM16.90

My date went for the English Herbs Butter Baked Lamb Chop (RM16.90). The lamb didn't have a pungent taste, perhaps being overpowered by the baked garlic. While I am not a fan of garlic per se, I quite like golden brown baked garlic like this. The lamb was pretty tender as well.

Pan Fried Dory Tower- RM18.90

I opted for the Pan Fried Dory Tower (RM18.90) as it is their signature dish. It's also recommended in Ho Jiak! The dish came beautifully presented, layer by layer to form a tower. The foundation is made of rice, a little bit like sushi rice but I find it rather tasteless, perhaps due to the lack of sauce. Alternating between dory fillets are 2 pieces of biscuits, similar to cream crackers but with a darker hue and bigger in size compared to your Jacob's cream crackers. I suppose this is the fusion part where I don't quite understand... biscuits with pan fried dory?? Hmmm... The dory fillets were nicely done though. The decorations are entirely edible as well, there's a piece of tempura'ed leaf, pastry stick, onion ring, deep fried lotus, potatoes and brocollies.

Hi, meet my date for the night, Khian. My childhood friend, we used to write old fashioned snail mails to each other after I moved schools and states. I remember she would update me on all the big and little things happening in and out of school (ie. my source of updates of all kinds). She still keeps me updated till now cos I'm kinda out of touch with most of the Ipoh girls I used to know :/ I call her the "Menteri Perhubungan"!! Hehe.

Map to Fusion Haven

Fusion Haven is definitely one hidden gem yet to be uncovered. Price point, the dishes are very affordable with its lunch menu from RM 5.90 to RM14.90. Other ala carte items are less than RM20. I really like the effort of the people behind Fusion Haven trying to offer fine dining food for normal cafe price. It's just what we need in these times where "cost-cutting, global economy crisis, no money..." are the most commonly used vocabulary in our daily lives.

Pan Ki Dim Sum @ Sri Petaling

Pan Ki Dim Sum
Pan Ki Dim Sum

Dim sum is no poor man's breakfast. I think everyone is aware of how prices of food have skyrocketed these days, as a matter of fact the moment oil prices shot up to RM2.70/litre. Although the fuel price has gone down (slowly but surely), food prices remained the same. I think sometimes this world doesn't work in logic.

Anyway, just yesterday, a few friends and I started our Christmas Day with a dim sum breakfast. Friend of ours was obviously deprived of dim sum as he has been away in the US for about 2 years and Pan Ki holds a nostalgic piece of memory for him as he has been frequenting the shop since young. The lady boss still recognized him but that didn't entitle us to any special priviledges (discounts, complimentary dishes etc).

We kickstarted the meal with some fried selection of sinful prawn wanton. It was alright but give me anything that has prawns in it and comes with mayo dipping I'll be one happy person! The fried prawn roll is just so-so as I could not really taste any prawn traces. The fried yam puffs was just ok too.

Next, we had a selection of steamed dim sums. All these are common dim sum fares, I wouldn't say they were great but neither were they unpallatable. The steamed dishes fared just between the 55-65% mark or B minus to C grade.

Dried oyster porridge

Prawn chee cheong fun
Prawns chee cheong fun

Amongst all the misses, there are actually 2 hits, the dried oyster porridge and chee cheong fun. The porridge was rather smooth and has hints of dried oysters. The taste was absolutely comforting as dried oysters brought out a fragrant yet not overpowering flavour. The chee cheong fun, though as ordinary as it looks, tasted good too. Soft and smooth chee cheong fun with little prawns enveloped in it, a dab of sambal belacan and fried shallots with a drizzle of soy sauce... right into the mouth :D

Chinese tea

And what better way to end the meal with the obligatory tradition of sipping cups of chinese tea to wash it all down? Our friend who got back from the States commented that he missed having chinese tea the most. Well, welcome home my friend!

The whole bill totalled about RM60+ for the 5 of us. For the quality of food we had, I'd say it was a little on the pricey side.

Familiar Faces Nyonya Food and Noodle House

Since Yiling is all busy working past midnight at her company's latest duty free outlet in the newly renovated Kota Kinabalu International Airport, I shall help her update her blog.

I know how Yiling loves her "paku pakis" so much, so I decided to bring her to a Nyonya restaurant located near my house in Sri Petaling because I know they serve "Paku Pakis". I was first introduced to "Paku Pakis" at the My Elephant Thai restaurant @ Seksyen 17, PJ by Yiling and I absolutely like it but not love it like Yiling :-p.

This restaurant is located at Sri Petaling's most famous food street, Jalan Radin Anum 1. Ho Ho steamboat is also located around the corner along this street.

So for our first visit here, we ordered the following...

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
"Lo Hon Kor" @ RM2 per cup to quench our thirsts.
Had a couple pieces of dried longan, strong "Lo Hon Kor" taste and not too sweet.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Nyonya Style fried Paku Pakis @ RM10 - The reason why we're here!

Yiling says there is a good hint of coconut in this dish. She gave this dish a thumbs up and comparable to My Elephant's version. I think this one's better! The sambal belacan sauce for the vege is very nice and goes really well with rice. I could just eat this dish and rice alone!

Fried Chicken Chop in Mango Sauce @ RM12
Nothing spectacular... Mango was a little too dry and not sour. But tastes good nonetheless.

Thai Style House Tofu @ RM10

This dish is worth praising because the crust is very unique, it's like the chinese dim sum "wu kok"/yam pastry. The batter must have been a secret blend cause you don't always see such crust. The tofu is actually a mix of fish paste and tofu like many other restaurant's "house specialty tofu". But this has a stronger fish paste texture than tofu texture. We both enjoyed this dish.

Overall we had a good first time experience at this restaurant. I am sure we will visit this place again some time in the future.

Btw, steamed rice was free flow... :-)

Another entry, brought to you by calvin.g Hope all you Yiling fans wont mind! Cheers!

mini assam laksa- rm1.90

Calvin: Yiling thinks it tastes pretty descent. I didn't dare to eat much because the last time I had assam laksa from Madam Kwan's, I had a bad stomach experience. Was just recovering.

fish and minced pork bits- rm3

Calvin: Both fish meat and pork meat were minced finely and the texture is very nice.

seafood porridge- rm22 (price varies for the type of seafood you want and servings)

Calvin: This is a must try in Sri Petaling...

big fresh succulent prawns, lala and squids! with smooth piping hot porridge...

Calvin: The porridge is creamy and the taste is just absolutely unique thanks to the combination of seafood. There is also a strong hint of chinese wine in it too. I used to eat often during weekends with my family.

Yiling: lucky restaurant is a well known hawker eatery place in sri petaling, and i quote from someone who wrote in the wikimap site, "One of Seri Petaling's relic buildings. Been here since forever. Any resident who doesn't know where Lucky Restaurant is should just pack up and leave."

very popular among residents here for weekend breakfast, so be there or be square!

restoran ho ho steamboat @ sri petaling

calvin has been telling me how good ho ho steamboat is which is nearby his home. so last sunday evening, we decided to give this place a visit.

boasting to be affiliated with pulau ketam (the ingredients perhaps?) as written in the signboard, the freshness of its ingredients is not doubted by us and the scores of patrons filling up the tables by 7pm is an indication of fresh food steamboat.

as with any other steamboats, one of the most important items is the sauce! ho ho offers its own blend of chilli sauce which goes best when mixed with a generous amount of sesame oil. forget about the calories...

calvin's interesting mix of noodles and poached eggs with generous sprinkle of pepper! it looks like a weird combination but its so simple and delish!

the downside though is that the minimum order is 2 pax. so to those planning to have some quality time alone eating steamboat, sorry lah ya. pricing is less than rm20 per pax, not too cheap considering some places have buffet steamboat at the same price. but then again, it's quality fresh food you're paying for ;-)
