点dim 心sum at king crab

this is a superrrrrrrr backdated food review post.

it was a sunday morning (one of the very few sundays where music class was cancelled), dad was back from dubai, we decided to have dimsum breakfast @ king crab. dad's fav breakfast :)

if you hadnt noticed, king crab, marco's pizza and pathlab have the same color scheme and they are all located at the same row of shops opposite kelana jaya lrt station.

see what i mean with the color schemes? red and yellow, striking and vibrant!

all three highly successful businesses belongs to the same owner of cos. and the owner happens to be mom's friend (we live in the same neighborhood, but of cos they live at a more atasan area-lah).

mom went and sampled the food before and she was all praises for the dimsum, albeit a lil' pricey no doubt.

a lil' introduction on 点dim 心sum that you should know and appreciate this chinese cuisine.

"The Cantonese phrase Dim Sum (點心) means literally "touch the heart" or "order to your heart's content". It may be derived from yat dim sum yi (一點心意), meaning "a little token". ("A Touch of Heart" is perhaps the more poetic translation.) Though the English word "dim sum" refers to the Cantonese variety, the idea of a wide variety of small dishes for lunch also holds for other regions of China." from Wikipedia

har gau 蝦餃 shrimp dumpling

shāo mài 烧卖 steamed dumplings with pork and crab roe

guō tiē 鍋貼 pan fried dumplings

wu gok 芋角 taro dumpling


DESSERTS

avocado roll

cold inside, crispy outside

cha siu sou 叉燒酥 flaky pastry with char siu

sesame balls with pandan filling


it was deeeliiiiseeeousss :)))))))


11 full stomachs = rm251.36


... but pricey nonetheless (bill shown is for 11 pax). my personal favs and recommended dishes are avocado rolls, prawn rolls and har gau. the prawns are really BIG. everyone loves BIG succulent prawns, right?


but if you ask me if king crab is comparable to ipoh famous
foh san, well in terms of the concept of dimsum, i still prefer the old fashion way of waitresses pushing carts carried with dimsum goodies around rather than ticking on kim gary style menus.

ticking boxes no doubt saves time but i like the personal touch and the fact that i can see the goodies before i order 'em. just my 2 cents worth ;)


in terms of types of cuisines offered, i think king crab has more variety (not too sure though), there are western dimsum'ed items that foh san doest have, like avocado roll which is very very very tasty. the thought of it now makes me drool :p

big apple donuts minus the coffee

i know, i know... the donuts craze has been quite some time now. ever since big apple was opened in the curve. honestly speaking, ive never been to big apple myself. it has always been people buying 'em back for me to eat. heheh ;-)

ever since my sis came back from her uk trip somewhere early last year, she had been going on and on and on and on... about how heavenly orgasmic krispy kremes taste like. but according to her, big apple is ok-lah... NEVARRRRR comparable to krispy kremes but MUCHHHHHH BETTARRRRRR than dunkins no doubt.



i think dunkins lost on its 'softness'.

kesimpulannya, dunkins is out of the donuts league and big apple is our consolation to krispy kremes. found out that j.co donuts and coffee opened in pavillion though. hope to try some of their donuts real soon... saw some pictures by other floggers (food bloggers) and the ultimate question popped up:

design-a-vios


*ya, i voted for myself, so?*


vios has always been my realistic dream car.


(my unrealistic dream cars include bmw z4, bmw x5, bmw 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 series, porsche, ferrari, mercz a-z class, yada yada yadaaa.)

if money is not a constraint (i wish money grow on MY trees!) i would really want a vios than myvi. its just the right size and its sucha beauty.

but, fact is... money IS a constraint :(

i have an undying love for vios. its the bestestest™ looking executive car.

the old vios i mean. the new vios looks so wrong in every single aspect IMHO.



anytheway, its not like i can afford to buy, so why bother eh?

dragon beard candy

dragon beard candy or 龙须糖 (lóng xū táng) is a traditional chinese candy. the Chinese Cultural Society in the college had their annual Mid autumn festival celebration in the afternoon and there were mochi, hard rock candies (ting ting tong), longan drinks, jelly mooncakes, dragon beard candies and many other varieties of candies for the sweet tooth on sale.

they were really really pretty to look at. so i bought a pack of 8 for rm8. very pricey, but ah well... all in the name of being chinese, eating chinese and celebrating a chinese festival.

i dont think ive eaten any dragon beard candy that deserves my THE BESTESTEST™ award just yet but this one that i bought...

*looks can be soooooo deceiving*

it was... horryterryvegetable. it was hard. it was super sticky. and it doesnt have enough peanuts filling. grrrrr....

well i read something on the internet that says these symptoms of hard, sticky and chewy are due to being left uneaten for more than 30-60 minutes. gosh... god knows how long those candies were pre-packed before i saved them from being uneaten.

you know how we chinese have a rhyming saying that goes, "mm pa mou yeh sek, zhui pa mm hou sek"?? (not afraid of hunger, but afraid of food that taste bad) or something to that effect-laah.


see how sticky it was?? even gravity loses hands down!


this deserves the inaugural never been given THE WORSTESTEST™ award for dragon beard candy.



i think the olden chinese are such creative people! look how they make dragon beard candies' beard strands... it makes the art of 'pulling' so cool. listen to what the super chef says, and answer my question:

'how many strands of beard can 12 folds create?'

Of food and songs

my eldest sister was feelin rather rich yesterday.

she wanted to treat the family for a dinner as she got her payment for a performance last week. second sister was as usual hilang entah mana on weekends, so it was only mom, eldest sis and i.

we went to klcc. eiling wanted to treat us Chilli's but well it was buka puasa time and there were '
人山人海 ' (people mountain people sea). so she suggested chinoz on the park.

reviews ive read alot. the restaurant's facade ive walked passed alot too. but to go in and dine, it was my first 111. i nearly cried of kamtung-ness (touched) out of eiling's generosity.

i will love you for eternity :)



anyway. we got seated and menus were given to us... and from then on, mom nagged nagged nagged. it is too damn pricey. and 3/4 of the words in the menu are not english.

okayyyyyyy. should i go easy on her pocket or should i fill my stomach with the most awesomest food???? very tough decision.

in the end, i let eldest sister decide on the dishes. im just here to eat and indulge in some atasan restaurant atmosphere, so even if its just normal pizza im sure it will taste heavenly ;-)

wah. shiiiiiok. eldest sis claims that chinoz has the bestestest hot choc cos they use the bestestest choc. well, she's in the choc industry so i guess she knows bestestest.

next up was the frutti di mare pizza. ohmy. its sooooooooo delleeeseeeeous.theres calamaries (and calories hehe), mussels (!!), prawns (!!!), fresh basel leaves, olives and cheeeeeeeeeeeeze.

mom ordered this chicken leek and mushroom pie. mom loveeeeeeees pies.
me no big fan of pies but it was nice nevertheless.

the final dish was chinoz burger and fries. the burger patty is as thick as a piece of steak! but its not a piece of steak :( its merely minced beef made patty. i felt it was a tad too dry though. and mcdonalds can beat the fries hands down.

p/s: mcdonalds fries is the bestestest :)

the burger itself was very filling. its meant for sharing i guess. the bill amounted to rm150++.

we asked to ta pau our pizza cos we couldnt finish it.



"eh....??!"

instead of a box (even that pizza stall at asia cafe has ta pau boxes!), chinoz version of ta pau is alluminium foil wrap.

well we did came to a conclusion that maybe those atasan people who eat there dont ta pau so there isnt any need for boxes in the first place.

haih kesiannyer jadi orang bukan atasan :(

yesterday aft'noon was a fantabulous aft'noon.

for those who know me well enough should know that i lurveeeee performing arts. well if you dont, now you do!

anyway, i posted a 'WANTED: Partner to go watch YKLS' for a few days on my msn pm. few friends offered to go with me. BUT they're all thousands of miles away... i thought i'll be going alone BUT thank god through kam zing who's all the wayyyyyy from swissland told me that elaine (both are my high school friends!) is interested too.

omg. such a cultured place. should come here more often ;)

the repertoire of songs were from their past productions such as 'Through the Barricades', 'Rodgers & Hammerstein', 'A Malaysian Affair', 'Beat it! Sing it!' and 'Four Seasons'.

the show opened with Susanna, Tracy and Ian singing 'Walk With Me'. well it really has been awhile listening to susanna sing, yea laine?

then the choir came out and sang 'Music Brings Us Together' (happened to find the song sang by another choir from dunno where). omg... hearing this song defintely brought back truckloads of memories!!

susanna is one of the few people i really do look up to. i would have never known the beauty of choral singing if not cos of her. i really really enjoyed the times singing in the school choir (though we sucked) under her tutelage.

darn, reminiscence again!

lien chai is our junior by one year. he was the school choir chairperson. boy... this guy whom we used to make fun of calling him 'leng chai, leng chai' has grown! and he can sing well!! haha, really proud of you man ;-)

somehow the desire to be a part of this choral group is burning stronger than ever. hmmm... maybe i can find a few kakis and join next year!
