madam kwan's @ mid valley

Free Photo Hosting - Photolava.com
putting a face behind the famous madam kwan's name- image shamelessly stolen from masak-masak

ok, blogging from work now.

calvin & i went to mid valley a couple of weeks back to catch redcliff, which in my opinion is teh awesome for a mandarin speaking, chinese directed, chinese cast, history inspired war setting movie! though, shameful to say i fell asleep in certain parts due to being too tired! and the best part is, there's a part 2 to this movie as i suppose you can't tell a story so well known and so lengthy and so much history involved in just 2 hours.

but i digressed.

we had dinner at madam kwan's as calvin was craving for assam laksa!

nasi lemak bojari- rm20.50

i had nasi bojari which comes with a colourful serving of rice, beef rendang, assam prawns, a big piece of freshly fried chicken and some greens. the assam prawn was tastefully done as the prawns were fresh. i like the beef rendang as it was not in chunks but flossed tenderly (rather spicy though). the *star* of the dish though is the chicken! it was fresh, came piping hot and tender!

assam laksa- rm12.30

in my opinion, it taste rather ok, but i shall not further elaborate considering after calvin had this, he had a terrible stomachache!

banana fritters with ice cream- rm10.20

you can see that by the time we've finished our mains, we were already pretty stuffed! the dessert was good stuff as the banana fritters are not those you find at roadside stalls, it comes in a whole banana rather than halves, drizzled with honey syrup and serve alongside vanilla ice cream.

service was pretty good and its packed during meal hours!

the famous kin kin pan mee

Free Photo Hosting - Photolava.com
kin kin chilli pan mee- best in kl, pj and some says the whole malaysia!

well ok, i know this particular pan mee is reviewed, raved and loved by many. but it is no doubt the bestest pan mee i have had in my entire (to be precise, 20 years 8 months) life! do you know what is the hardest part of this food blogging thing???

must have ingredients- fried to crisp anchovies and minced meat topped with silky smooth white poached egg

to drool over the food you ate a month ago just by looking at the pictures again! and the difficulties to describe how each strand of noodles, every spoonful of the wondrous poached egg, the kickass chilli (also what makes the famous kin kin- famous as it is) taste.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

bursting with flavors and textures- spicy, hot, wet, asskickin' good!

*star* element- what makes kin kin chilli pan mee famous

Calvin's advice:
Don't take too much of their signature dry chili even though you can stand it! Seriously... I am not joking. I can take spicy and I mean it, I was seriously enjoying the chilli pan mee meal but the after experience of too much of Kin Kin's dry chilli is not so pleasant! (In the toilet~it burns baby!)

Free Photo Hosting - Photolava.com
a bowl of spinach soup to wash it all down...

one bowl will not be enough to satisfy. go on, order your 2nd, 3rd bowl because it's truly worth the extra kg. at rm4.60 per bowl, it is not cheap but certainly worth to satisfy that chilli pan mee craving and curiousity.

now if only kin kin is next to my office, i will religiously eat this everyday.

*p/s: my reliable sources informed me that there's a noodle shop which serves chilli pan mee in ss15, subang. i shall pay it a visit one day and see if it passes my chilli-pan-mee-o-meter!

mini assam laksa- rm1.90

Calvin: Yiling thinks it tastes pretty descent. I didn't dare to eat much because the last time I had assam laksa from Madam Kwan's, I had a bad stomach experience. Was just recovering.

Calvin: Both fish meat and pork meat were minced finely and the texture is very nice.

Calvin: This is a must try in Sri Petaling...

big fresh succulent prawns, lala and squids! with smooth piping hot porridge...

Calvin: The porridge is creamy and the taste is just absolutely unique thanks to the combination of seafood. There is also a strong hint of chinese wine in it too. I used to eat often during weekends with my family.

Yiling: lucky restaurant is a well known hawker eatery place in sri petaling, and i quote from someone who wrote in the wikimap site, "One of Seri Petaling's relic buildings. Been here since forever. Any resident who doesn't know where Lucky Restaurant is should just pack up and leave."

very popular among residents here for weekend breakfast, so be there or be square!

sate celup @ big three restaurant

Free Photo Hosting - Photolava.com
raw food in sticks- kangkung is my fav!

craving for sate celup is a bad thing especially when you're living nowhere near the famous capitol sate celup @ malacca! but don't fret, if malacca can't come to you... you can always go to subang, ss15 to be exact to satisfy those sudden cravings!

to be honest, we didn't know of the existence of this place until we tried googling and this website pops up. well, no harm trying plus its at a familiar territory!

we were greeted and served by the lady boss. according to the lady boss, the eatery place has just opened for about one and 1/2 months. we were the first customers there that night. we were served three appetizers which were on the house as calvin had sms'ed to enquire bout this place. the food taste very homely, something that my mom, your mom, and everyone else's mom can whip up.

refridgerator storing the sate sticks

there are a few promotions at the moment-
1. 10% for all customers
2. 15% for students
3. 50% for 5th customer

we took on the rm19.90 all you can eat buffet with additional 10% disc. considering that each stick costs rm1, the buffet deal is worth it provided you can eat at least 20 sticks!

Free Photo Hosting - Photolava.com
sate celup sauce- rm1 per pax

the variety of food is not many, at least not as many when compared to the famous capitol sate celup @ malacca. very normal kinda variety as well, fishballs, prawns, cuttlefish, squid balls, etc. my absolute favourite is of course the kangkung! we also like the jelly fish and mushrooms. other than that, the selection is pretty blahhhh.

Free Photo Hosting - Photolava.com
sate celup celup celup!

to be honest, i must admit it is not easy when everyone compares you to the sate celups in malacca. but i suppose it's a good effort and at least there's a place we can go to when we're having our sudden cravings for sate celup in kl!

belanja you one stick if you can guess the correct answer!

breakfast at petaling street

Free Photo Hosting - Photolava.com
hon kee famous porridge since 1959

almost anyone and everyone who has had walked along the famous petaling street would know the existance of hon kee, a humble little stall that serves smooth silky porridge worth boasting about.

'sang yu' in piping hot porridge

you see, what makes hon kee more extraordinary than the usual porridge stalls you find littering every nook and cranny of food courts and wherenots is the raw fish it serves alongside with piping hot porridge! it's alittle bit like having yee sang/sashimi. being cautious eaters, we decided to be safe by dipping the raw slices of fish into our porridge and making sure that they're cooked thoroughly before consuming, but i've seen the older generation eating 'em raw, sashimi style! so, it's really up to you how you wanna savour the catch of the day...

with extra raw egg

with extra crunchy fried intestines

these fried little things make the whole breakfast experience more worthwhile and satisfying. so yumm (jen pls don't barf, u can skip this part ;-p) that i requested to ta pau a pack as snacks (rm5, not cheap as snacks)! i know it's sinful... but it's too sinful to say nooooooooooo...!

chee cheong fun in onion oil and loadsa sesame- rm3

one of the most plain but most awesome ccf i've had in kl. to be honest, the ccf deserves to have the same limelight and fame and be mentioned in the same breath as the porridge. i like my ccf plain like this, no curry/sweet sauce/foreign alien gravy. its so le yum that i ta pau a pack for lunch the next day at office, topped with sinful crunchy intestines... soooooo good that the whole morning i was looking forward for lunch!

bbq bacon strips- rm9 (100gm)

when one is inarguably a carnivorous, one will never be able to resist the sight and smell of this (pic above)! to buy or not to buy.... TO BUY OF COS! eat it as a snack or sandwich it with bread, it's finger lickin' good! an expensive and fattening snack though, but these two words are non-existent in my gastronomic dictionary!

cheers to good food and more!
