Great Coffee and Delicious Breakfast at Brew & Bread

Welcome to great coffee and delicious breakfast!

What makes a good breakfast joint? Good coffee and juices, wholesome and delicious meal options, friendly serving staff and a cozy environment... and a bonus if it's 5 mins away from home!

Brew & Bread, that's what I'm talking about.

B&B bar - spot the brand of beans used for your coffee

I recently discovered this new cafe in my Kota Kemuning neighbourhood where another cafe used to be but has since closed down. I had spotted it when I went for my monthly car wash just opposite, and one fine afternoon my sister and I decided to skip the famous pork ball noodle shop for brunch and came here instead.

It was just their 1st week of opening. The ambiance and deco is cozy and earthy with the use of wood for its brown and black interiors.

Flat White - RM7

Iced Latte - RM7

Fresh Orange Juice - RM7

As of today, and their 3rd week of opening, I have returned to B&B for 3 times. You can tell I really like this place. The focus of beverage is of course their coffee, using the branded Illy beans - I like their brew, having tried their Flat White, Cafe Latte and Cappucino. On my 3rd visit, they have extended the drinks to include fresh orange juice. I'm a sucker for fresh orange juice!

Petite 4 - RM10

Truffle Mushroom Sandwich - RM9

If you want something light, danish pastries are available - lightly toasted to warm it, they make quite good bites. There are a few options for sandwiches, within the range of RM9 - RM12. I have tried the Truffle Mushroom Sandwich. I find it refreshing and light as it's meatless and bonus points for being toasted and served warm!

Eggs Waldorf - RM18

Would you Oooohh to that??

Eggs Benedict - RM18

And some Aaaaah??

At the moment, there are only 3 options for the brunch menu - Eggs Benedict / Eggs Florentine / Eggs Waldorf. I've tried the Egss Ben (with ham) and Eggs Waldorf (with sauteed mushrooms) and glad to say I'm quite impressed. The portion is big (worth the price), eggs poached like how it is supposed to be and love the seedless grapes addition for a refreshing balanced touch.

Basil Pesto Pasta - RM15

We decided to also try their new pasta option, the Basil Pesto Fettuccine. Done al dante, and delicious though the chicken chunks were on a drier side.

A good cuppa coffee makes a difference to one's day!

All in all, I hope they will extend their menu to include more breakfast options, i.e. full English breakfast or sausages & bacon, etc and more fresh juices! I urge those living in / out of Kota Kemuning to give this new joint a visit and hope it's stays to satisfy my cravings for good coffee, fresh juices and delicious breakfast.

To be honest, I think I'm beginning to really like Kota Kemuning. Lakeside for my weekend morning / evening jogs, golf driving range when I need to hit some balls, McD drive thru when I'm in need of Happy Meals, petrol station, banks, post office, dai chow, car workshops,....... and Brew & Bread!

Pradi Prada @ Kota Kemuning

A hearty dinner; Fried Chicken with Kunyit; Fu Yong Omelette; Kedondong Juice

Pradi Prada has been around longer than I had expected it to survive. Back in those days when the Kota Kemuning township was ready, the financial crisis hit and the commercial area became dead. Anyone shops/businesses that opened rarely lasted more than half a year. Those who survived and thrived on were a handful- Pradi Prada was one of them.

Specializing in Penang style Nyonya food, it is a neighbourhood favourite for a casual weekend dine out. The dishes are simple fare, tasted very homely and affordable too. My family dined here a month back and had Fish Head Curry, Assam Prawns, Paku Pakis Belacan, Fu Yong Omelette and Fried Chicken with Kunyit.

Fish Head Curry; Assam Prawns

It was indeed a hearty and satisfying meal followed by a very refreshing Kedondong Juice. The whole bill came to about RM60. There is also a complimentary hot dessert of the day- ours was Sweet Potato tong sui.

Little Ben Cafe

Herbaline Beauty Square

In trouble times like this, every penny counts. So when a cafe offers a RM4.90 set lunch deal, what do you do?

Little Ben Cafe

Jump at the offer and drive straight to the cafe for a RM4.90 lunch of course! Don't worry about forgetting to bring your wallet/purse, I'm sure you can find RM4.90 under your car seats even though there're in coins!

Tick Tick Tick

The ordering process is fairly simple. Just browse through the menu and tick your orders ala HK char chan teng style! Walk over to the cashier and hand her your order, pay, get back to your seat and wait for the food to arrive!

Sailor Mee Set Lunch- RM4.90

Little Ben Cafe offers a special every day. For ie. Sundays are Sailor Mee days. It was a Sunday, and we had the Sailor Mee, which in actual fact is Pan Mee but served in a sailor hat shaped bowl. The set lunch includes a drink and a slice of watermelon. For less than RM5 (which is true, no unnecessary taxes), this is a pretty good lunch deal. The noodles came in bite pieces and in quite a big bowl too.

Red Wine Mee Suah- RM9.90

I was a little torn between the cute Nasi Dagang which Ziling claimed was pretty good according to her colleague and the Red Wine Mee Suah as it looks pretty tempting from the menu. I chose the latter. I have not had many Red Wine Mee Suah in my life, so I can't really judge but it was palatable plus still a good lunch deal with the accompanying lemongrass drink and fruit.

Lemongrass tea + A slice of watermelon

To sum it up, tastewise, Little Ben may just be another average joe among the many many eateries out there or even in Kota Kemuning itself but I must commend the proprietors for coming up with such a great concept and offering meals at less than RM10. I'm not kidding, nothing in the menu is above RM10! It has a great ambience though- modern contemporary furnitures, free wifi and even computers for you to surf the net, long tables for family dine-outs... etc.

I heard this place is especially packed on weekday lunch hours, and even when we were there on a Sunday, it was packed too!

The cafe is located within the Herbaline Beauty Square in Kota Kemuning, a rather interesting concept of a huge premise which houses a spa, yoga center, knowledge center, hair saloon, and a cafe with lush green surrounding and easy parking.

Ah Lim Seafood @ Kota Kemuning

Ah Lim Seafood @ Kota Kemuning
AH LIM SEAFOOD has its origins in Tanjung Tualang, Perak, a place famous for its udang galah or blue fresh water prawns. The restaurant, formerly at Vest Inn Coffeeshop in USJ 16, Subang Jaya, moved into its own premises in Kota Kemuning in May 2006. Its founders, two Lim brothers from the Perak town, came to Kuala Lumpur in the mid-1990s, worked with a number of seafood restaurants and decided to strike out on their own in 2001.

Specialties

(1) Fried crabs(in various style)
(2) Fried noodles with udang galah(sang har mein)
(3) Deep fried homemade bean curd with sauce
(4) Braised pork knuckles
(5) Fried intestines with dried prawns

(Excerpt from Rasa Rasa Malaysia)

I remember reading about this particular dai chow in one of The Star Metro's food review awhile back. This review is at least a month backdated hehe, sometimes I just lose the will (ie. lazy) to write anything on this blog!

Kam Heong Lala

Marmite Pork Ribs

String beans, okra, brinjal & petai combo

Salted egg fried squid

Tofu with minced meat

The dinner overall was satisfying. No complains on the food although we had expected the salted egg fried squid to look like the one at King Crab. Ah Lim's version is watery and I think it goes great with white rice. Both dry and watery version taste just as awesome!

Well, it is quite surprising to note that the eatery used to operate from the very same shop my aunt's noodle stall is at now. And discovering that it has affiliations with Tanjung Tualang, the place famous for its fresh water prawns in Perak. I think this just calls for another eat-out and we might just try out the dishes recommended on Rasa Rasa website.

Kota Kemuning's food scene is certainly coming to life!

MCF Fish & Noodle @ Kota Kemuning

MCF Fish & Noodle

I am not a big fan of fish noodles (ie. fish head noodles) although I superlove fishballs, fish paste, fish fillet in my noodles. Perhaps I don't have the acquired taste for soup noodles with evaporated milk. The combination is just.... weird.

But, I will still eat them.

Last 2 weeks ago, it was one of the regular nights where both Eiling and I were home late from work and Ziling was as usual hilang entah mana. We didn't have the time to cook, so we decided to eat out. I blindly drove around the neighbourhood and this was the first shop that attracted us- big red banner and it's a new eatery place. We decided to give it a shot.

(Actually I didn't quite realize we were in for fish noodles until we settled down at the table and had a look at the menu, both of us were busy talking away...)

Seafood noodles- RM11.50

Eiling ordered the seafood noodles. It came looking like it's nicely done and all, but when Eiling started to dig in, she found hair in it! Disgusting! She called the waiter and he brought the bowl back in the kitchen but soon came out bringing the same bowl- only difference is that the hair has been plucked out. After going through half the bowl, Eiling remarked that their definition of 'seafood' is fish paste and prawns. There weren't any signs of other seafood occassionally found in seafood noodles ie. squid, cuttlefish, clams etc. Adding to the already very bad review is the prawns weren't fresh. Sighs zero hits, and so many misses in a bowl.

Plus, it was expensive!

Fish Paste Noodles- RM7.50

Mine came slightly better, at least I didn't find any stray hairs...... The bowl of noodles did not impress, it fared only so-so, perhaps I am already biased from the start (I don't like evaporated milk in my soup!!). At RM7.50, it was a pretty expensive one-course dinner, I think I would have like to spend it eating McDonalds instead.

The restaurant was very quiet and adding to the bad dining experience we had, it's just a matter of time before it meets the fate of other eateries which had opened and closed down.......

Pun Chun Duck Noodles @ Kota Kemuning

Pun Chun Noodle House

It's funny how I live in Kota Kemuning, yet not knowing this hidden gem in the neighborhood until I read about it at somewhere else!

OK, so maybe I don't really venture WITHIN the neighborhood itself (except for a few regular shops for convenience) but knowing from past experiences, the eatery shops that opened up in Kota Kemuning either lacked in the taste department or they just disappear from the scene a couple months later (ie. gulung tikar, zhap lup, bankrupt).

Iced barley- RM1.30

'Cham' (Mixed)- RM1.20

It's abit surprising that recently there have been a couple of 'famous' eateries opening up in Kota Kemuning itself- perhaps the crowd is getting better? Secret Recipe is here for a while now, Dominoes Pizza just opened a couple months back, Pizza Vs Satay has landed, and joining these few more famous ones is Delifrance- saw the buntings hanging around the township. But I supposed the most McFamous and McProfitable eatery joint within the neighbourhood is still McDonald's!

Pun Chun is a familiar name and especially needs no further introduction for those who frequents Bidor. Even still, many KL-ites know of Pun Chun as well- such a shame for me! It's still puzzles me why of all places in KL that PC decided to open a branch in Kota Kemuning? Perhaps rental is cheap... but that did not translate to cheap food.

Duck drumstick mee soup- RM6.80

Duck drumstick mee dry- RM6.80

We had the famous duck drumstick noodles, one dry and one soup- just to have a taste of both worlds. It took awhile for food to arrive as the corner shop was packed to the brim- a testimonial for good food or famous-ness :D The dry version came with a metal bowl of herbal soup and a duck drumstick- flavourful and just comforting. I suppose what makes this bowl of noodles special is the tenderness of the duck drumstick, the herb infused soup and did I tell you I LOVE herbal flavoured food (ie. herbal chicken, herbal soup, bak kut teh... erm ok that's bout it).

Prawn Wan Ton (7 pcs)- RM5.30

We also had a side order of prawn wan ton which came in 7 pcs. It came in reasonable sizes and was definitely a great addition to the whole meal.

Pun Chun chicken biscuits- RM3

While I was at the counter for payment, I noticed chicken biscuits and immediately grabbed a pack! I love the crunchy crispy chicken biscuit! It came in 12 pieces and I polished it off (don't know why my sisters don't like it??? it's so yummy!!)- more for me then :D

I heard that Pun Chun is also famous for it's wu kok (yam puff) but unfortunately it's not available at the Kota Kemuning branch.

I see some hope in the Kota Kemuning eating scene now :)

Lemongrass Cafe @ Kota Kemuning

Free Image Hosting - Photolava.com
Bright neon lights of Lemongrass Cafe

It is once again one of those weekend nights when we don't want to drive 20km out of the neighbourhood just for a simple meal. Even though with the fuel price reduction, I still don't feel the 'extras' I am actually saving as the tank doesn't get filled up all the time. However I do notice the 'extra' fuel I am getting, RM50 gets me 16 litres of petrol when it was RM2.55, now it gets me about 21 litres odd. Whatever 'extras' I am getting is all wasted at accelerating and breaking whhile stuck in the strawberry traffic jam, especially during this rainy season. Le tour de le sigh.

Chicken chop with mushroom sauce- RM8.80

Lemongrass Cafe is a relatively new cafe opened in the quiet little township of Kota Kemuning. The name should not be confused/misunderstood for a Thai cuisine place though. It is surprising that quite a few eateries have opened up in the past few months such as Domino's Pizza, Pizza Vs Satay, Secret Recipe and a few other still surviving stand-alone cafes such as Padi Prada, Cravings and Treats. Even the Bidor famous Pun Chun duck noodle is here!

The decoration at Lemongrass Cafe is pretty impressive considering the simplicity of its menu- oriental and fusion cuisines at reasonable/affordable pricing. I suppose it is trying to draw revenue from the working lunch crowd on weekdays. Eiling had the chicken chop with mushroom sauce (RM8.80). The chicken was breaded and fried to golden brown, served with fries and coleslaw sides. At such a price, the chicken was indeed a steal! It is not the best in town but I suppose it deserves a mention in the 'affordable/reasonable' category.

Special Butterworth Curry Mee- RM6.80

I had the special butterworth curry mee (RM6.80). Never was/am I a curry noodles fan but I decided to give this a try. The bowl of noodles came superfast, almost as instant as McDonalds. It came in a very pale and light orange color broth with generous servings of long beans, fu pok and prawns. After adding in the sambal, the color changed accordingly (as pictured above). The curry/sambal taste was not overpowering, a rather mild bowl of curry noodles I would say. Definitely not for those who enjoys a strong spicy kick in their bowl of curry noodles.

Papaya with milk- RM3.80, Sour plum with lemon- RM3.50

Lemongrass Cafe's beverages menu is worth a mention as it is very affordable, averaging from RM1+ to RM3+, making drinks obligatory with the meal. Although the papaya milk (RM3.80) is quite diluted, it still offered me a sense of satisfaction as papaya milk is very rare and together with carrot milk, the both orange-colored juices are my favourites!

As I am writing this entry, I am listening to the beautiful sounds of X'mas on Chinese musical instruments. How fusion is that! Oh how I long for the year end festive holidays! It's 10.15pm, I suppose this gives me the license to dream.........

Shin o-shima Japanese Restaurant (buffet steamboat)

Free Photo Hosting - Photolava.com
shin o-shima japanese restaurant with a banner of steamboat promotion

this food review is pretty irrelevant with the restaurant as im not going to review bout the japanese food in this japanese place. saw a flyer that theres an all-you-can-eat steamboat buffet at rm20 per pax and decided to try it one saturday night 2 weeks back...

a balance of both clear broth and tom yum

we came with no expectations. i mean "harro, japanese place with steamboat...? errr...." but overall we were pretty satisfied with the meal. the ingredients fared pretty ok, considering its 20bucks. the broth tasted sweet at the end as we added alot of seafood and most surprising was there were crabs too. we didnt eat them, just for soup flavoring.

for a more complete meal, there are also free flow of drinks (choice of longan drink, cincau or water) and ice creams (i like the pistachio one).
